A new frontier in biotechnology education at Government College of Engineering, Tirunelveli
The Department of Industrial Biotechnology at Government College of Engineering, Tirunelveli, was established in the academic year 2025–2026, offering an undergraduate programme with an annual intake of 60 students. The programme was instituted in accordance with the announcement made in the State Budget on 14.03.2025 by the Hon'ble Minister for Finance and Environment & Climate Change, and formalized through G.O. (Ms.) No.147, Higher Education (J1) Department, dated 05.07.2025.
This programme has been introduced to address the rapidly evolving advancements in biotechnology and to meet the growing demands of industry and research sectors. The Department aims to serve as a hub for academic excellence, innovation, and skill development in the field of Industrial Biotechnology.
The programme is designed to promote biotechnology education, foster entrepreneurship and start-up initiatives, and facilitate research and its commercialization. It also strives to build regional expertise in biotechnology across southern Tamil Nadu, thereby supporting the development of local industries, agriculture, and healthcare sectors, while contributing to sustainable societal growth.
